Inside Science: Researchers Mimic Biology to Make a Better, ‘Buggy’ Microphone

Research into insect hearing systems have yielded an improved, directional microphone.

Researchers and tech-startup Soundskrit have brought biology and machinery together in the creation of a new class of microphone: a directional microphone inspired by the hearing systems of insects. These microphones are able to sense the direction of sound while still being packed closely together, an improvement over traditional microphone systems. This new microphone is made possible by mimicking the way insects hear: through the sensing of flow of air and not air pressure.
